Sonam Wangchuk: The Engineer Who Reimagined Himalayan Education
×

In the high deserts of Ladakh, India, education was often inaccessible and outdated, leaving children disconnected from both their heritage and modern opportunities. Sonam Wangchuk, born in 1966, refused to accept this. He became an engineer, inventor, and social entrepreneur, transforming education and environmental practices in the Himalayan region.

Wangchuk is best known for founding the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an initiative that redesigns schools to be student-friendly, practical, and connected to local culture. He also invented the Ice Stupa, an ingenious artificial glacier that provides water to villages during harsh winters.

Sonam’s work blends engineering, creativity, and social vision, addressing pressing environmental and educational challenges in some of the world’s harshest terrains. His story shows that the Himalayas produce not only spiritual leaders and adventurers but also innovators who improve everyday life.

He is a Himalayas Hero because he proves that vision and action can transform communities, even in the most remote corners of Asia.
